Johnson Introduces Resolution Condemning Trump Administration for Using Signal to Share Classified Information

March 27, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC — Congresswoman Julie Johnson (TX-32), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and House Homeland Security Committee, introduced a resolution condemning the Trump Administration for using Signal to share classified information regarding future war plans, endangering the lives of American troops and military personnel.

“The Trump Administration’s reckless decision to use Signal to share classified information isn’t just a breach of protocol—it’s a direct threat to American lives,” said Johnson.“Mishandling sensitive intelligence puts our troops, our allies, and our entire national security at risk. And their gross misconduct is a clear violation of the Federal Records Act, which requires members of any administration to properly document this type of information. This isn’t about politics; it’s about accountability. Republicans have a responsibility to speak up. Behind closed doors, they know this was a grave error. But in front of cameras, they stay silent or make excuses for this inexcusable behavior. This resolution is their chance to put country over party and stand up against this negligence. Congress must come together to recognize the danger this incident posed to our own national security.”

On March 24, 2025, The Atlantic’s Editor-In-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg published an article detailing how members of Trump’s national security team, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, included Goldberg in a Signal group chat that discussed plans to attack Houthi targets in Yemen.

Signal is an open-source, encrypted messaging service for instant messaging, voice calls, and video calls. It is not considered a secure channel to share classified information and is often targeted by hackers in China and other adversarial nations to gain access to sensitive information.

Congresswoman Julie Johnson represents Texas’ 32nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. She serves on the Homeland Security Committee, Foreign Affairs Committee, and House Administration Committee. Her district includes parts of Collin, Dallas, and Denton Counties.
