Johnson Urges Trump Administration to Prevent Cuts to Local School Districts

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Julie Johnson (TX-32), along with 40 of her colleagues, sent a letter to the Department of Education expressing deep concern for the disbursement of Impact Aid. The letter addressed the program’s effect on school districts across the nation, including Texas, and how it fills funding gaps.
“We demand the immediate reversal of any Executive Orders that would halt the disbursement of Impact Aid funds through the Department of Education,” the Members wrote. “Students are our nation’s future leaders. It is the federal government’s job to ensure the needs of all students are met so that public education can remain a stable and accessible foundation for everyone to succeed, no matter their background or where they live.”
The Federal Impact Aid Program provides critical funding to more than 8 million students and 1,000 school districts across the nation that lose local tax revenue due to the presence of tax-exempt federal property, like military bases or Indian lands, or that incur additional costs from educating federally connected students. This includes children from military families, Native American tribes, and federal civilian employees.
Texas school districts like Lewisville ISD and Lake Dallas ISD depend on Impact Aid to provide quality education to their students, particularly given funding issues from their proximity to federal lands or facilities. The Trump Administration's efforts to dismantle the Department of Education create uncertainty around the future of this crucial funding, potentially disrupting the education of millions of students.
