Johnson Votes No on Republican Budget

WASHINGTON, DC — Congresswoman Julie Johnson (TX-32) released the following statement after her vote against the Republican budget, condemning it as an assault on North Texas working families, children, and seniors.
“This budget is a direct attack on the people I represent,” said Johnson. “I voted no because the Republican budget guts health care, slashes food assistance, and undercuts economic opportunity in North Texas, all to give another massive tax break to Donald Trump and his billionaire friends. Over 102,000 people in my district rely on Medicaid, including 80,000 children and 12,000 seniors, and another 103,000 count on Affordable Care Act coverage to get the care they need. This budget takes that coverage away and hikes premiums by as much as $13,000 a year for some families. And while grocery prices keep rising, nearly 29,000 households in North Texas count on SNAP to put food on the table, but Republicans are gutting that too. This isn’t about fiscal responsibility. It’s cruel. And I am disgusted that my Republican colleagues, knowing full well how many people in their own districts would suffer, pushed this budget through anyway because they’re too afraid to stand up to Trump. I will keep fighting for working families, children, and seniors in North Texas, because while my Republican colleagues bow to Trump, I came to Washington to stand up for the people I represent.”
During debate, Johnson asked for an amendment to be considered on the floor that would have prevented cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. Republicans rejected this amendment from being considered.
